Yoga Challenge – Hydration and Ayurveda

Happy Day 23 of our 30 Day Yoga Challenge – Hydration & Ayurveda

Good morning Yogis! Today we are going to take a quick break for a special self-care feature before we return to our practices inspired by the 8 Limbs of Yoga.

When we started our first challenge in June, today was National Hydration Day! I have mentioned that I love resolutions, and “drink more water” has been at the top of my New Years’ Resolutions list every year for at least 20 years. I also love holidays and any reason to celebrate, so I hope you all enjoy recognizing some of these random national and international holidays. Today we will focus on hydration before restarting our 8 Limbed Yoga practices, since I personally need to revisit my resolution to drink more water and many of you may also struggle with this.

This is also a good time to introduce Ayurveda (EYE-your-VAY-duh), which literally translates as “science of life” and can be thought of as a sister science to Yoga. You may be familiar with some Ayurvedic practices such as neti (sinus rinsing), oil pulling, or tongue scraping. Many of these practices are recommended first thing in the morning, along with drinking water. Ayurveda recommends drinking warm water to start the day after cleaning the mouth, but I personally prefer tea rather than water to start the day. Ayurveda also recommends drinking less water or other liquids at/with meals to aid digestion.

Today’s Positive Practice suggestion

Today’s Daily Yogi Practice is to track, evaluate, and possibly increase your hydration levels. If you are like me and need help with this, maybe get a new water bottle to keep water with you and help track oz you drink during the day. If you have a favorite bottle already, perhaps try the Ulla clip which will blink to remind you if you have not drunk for a while (thanks to S for this tip!). Try adding fruit, mint, tea, cucumber, etc to your water if that encourages you to drink more during the day. Or perhaps try an app like Drink Water – Daily Reminder (free version is fine) to help with tracking and pop-up reminders, and a tool for a personalized recommended oz of water per day.

  1. I try to drink about 100 ounces a day (I have a 32 ounce bottle and try to fill it up 3x) but usually fail. I recently got this gadget called an Ulla that attaches to your water bottle and blinks if you forget to drink, and this has actually helped a lot (as long as I remember to keep my water bottle on me, which is another issue lol).

  2. I have been very bad about drinking water lately and I am going to work on changing that. I filled up my favorite water bottle today and have been pretty good about drinking it. I may set up some reminders in my phone to drink water.

  3. I am horrible with hydration and I know this is something I absolutely have to improve upon. I have a fruit infusion pitcher that I hope will motivate me to drink more water. I’ll also use some of the suggestions above, the beeping device sounds like it would work great!

  4. Not to brag, but I am awesome at drinking water. I definitely drink enough when I’m home and try to always bring some when I go out. I get headaches without it!
